The main feature of the deep brain arrays is their long shaft. It can be as long as 10 mm. For rats, this length is long enough to reach any deep structure of the brain. The potential use is for implantation in deep brain structures such as the amygdala, piriform cortex, and the hypothalamus.
The PVN array is a specially designed for implantation in both sides of the hypothalamic paraventricular nuclei.
Both conventional and our modular connectors can be used to make the deep brain array. Deep brain arrays use 50 um wire with spacing 400-500 um between the shafts. It will be better to remove the dura for implantation of deep brain arrays.
Right panel figure shows the examples of deep brain arrays.
